Pasta with Fried Cabbage and Brats
Here is a great recipe for a cheap but tasty meal on a budget, and it takes only about 30 minutes. Cabbage is a great source of vitamins, so it’s really good for you.
You probably don’t think much of cabbage since usually it doesn’t look that appealing in most food places. But it’s all about how you cook it. I personally dislike cabbage that’s barely cooked and looks white (yuk!). For this particular recipe, the cabbage needs to be fried until it looks caramelized or golden brown. Anyway, let’s get down to business.
Ingredients
- 1/2 small cabbage head
- oil
- 1 medium onion
- 1 pack of sausage, bratwurst or hot dogs (4-6 pieces)
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 medium tomatoes
- cooked pasta
Preparation
Shred cabbage into long and thin slices cutting it with a knife through the layers. Heat up some vegetable oil in a skillet (about 1 tablespoon) and place your cabbage in it. Fry cabbage on a medium heat for about 8 minutes or until it starts to change color. Make sure to flip it frequently and add more oil as needed, so that the cabbage doesn’t burn (cooking time can vary, so use your best judgement).
In a separate skillet, fry up the sliced brats in some oil until they look browned (soak up the extra oil from the brats by placing them on a plate with paper-towel in it). Back in the main cabbage skillet, add thinly sliced onion half-circles and cover with the lid (open only to flip the cabbage occasionally). Continue to fry the cabbage for another 10 minutes or so. Add salt and pepper to taste. When the mixture start to look golden brown, add sliced tomatoes and the cooked brats. Cover. Fry the cabbage mixture for another 5 minutes on low heat and then try it for doneness (it should be soft and not crunchy). Serve the cabbage with some cooked pasta and a toast – what a meal!
